    Default Phenolic Tips Legal

Sorry, if this is a repeat question. I ran a couple of searches, but couldn't find anything definitive on this subject. My question is, are the phenolic tips on Predator's BK2 and Air Jump Cue legal with BCA and other leagues? I am pretty sure they are ok in APA, but have heard some concerns regarding BCA. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

    4K4,
The phenolic tips are legal across the board except where prohibited. Sounds like an oxymoron so let me explain. To the best of my knowledge, the IPT has been the only one to prohibit their use and since it was their tournament they can do anything they want. It's a mute point though as the IPT no longer exists. I would think that if anyone banned them it would be the APA, but since they haven't, I'd say you're good to go.

There was some talk of jump cues being legalized for use in the APA when we were attending the APA Nationals. I could not get a definite answer from anyone associated with the APA, but the rumor was that they were under pressure from their cue sponsor to allow them. Again though, this is a rumor. Would be nice to see.

i've heard rumors too of allowing jump cues in APA soon. some individual league operators allow you now to jump with your break cue (full cue only), though on the regional/national level this is not allowed.

doesn't the bca rule for tips say that the tip has to be leather or synthetic leather? i think technically a tip would have to have leather bits in it, even if the rest was phenolic to qualify. i think the bunjee tips are made like this.

I have heard that at the 2006 APA National Team Championships that an official did allow a player to play a legal jump shot with their full size breaking cue.

The wording of the BCA rules is what prompted my original post. Unfortunately, it appears that there is language that would lead one to believe that phenolic tips are not legal in BCA and potentially other organizations.

Is there a way to ask the BCA directly for a position on this wording?

Well, I decided to contact the BCA directly, and ask the question. This is their response, from Bill Stock, the Rules and Referee Program Administrator.

Bill, thank you for your quick and clear response.

Phenolic tips are legal for BCA Pool League events. However, if it is a Phenolic ferule that is rounded off it is not legal. It must be a tip that is attached to the ferule.
